South Africa has a high unemployment rate of up to 40% of the working population and over the years there have been a few initiatives to address the crisis. In 1998, the trade union movement formed the Job Creation Trust after the National Presidential Jobs Summit. Trade union members contributed a day’s salary to the Trust and their unions made donations enabling the fund to accumulate R100-million.Other initiatives include the AIDC’s 1 million Climate Jobs Campaign.

In this edition of Workers on Wednesday we revisit these job creation initiatives and find out if they are or can make a dent in our crisis of unemployment.
