In recent times much has been made of “the Fourth Industrial Revolution” wherein it is predicted that much of human work functions will be taken over by new technology and robots. In some respects replacing workers with new technology is not new as for example in the car manufacturing industry. The replacement of labours historically done by a human hand and mind is advancing apace into other industries. Now you may notice that Pick ‘n Pay is replacing cashiers with new technology in certain stores.

In today’s show we discuss what this Fourth Industrial Revolution is all about, if it will affect South Africa and what it will mean for the labour market. Will it worsen our already dire unemployment and poverty situation and how should we - trade unions, workers, government and communities - respond?
