South Africa is again facing massive job losses as employers gear up to retrench thousands of workers in the mining, metal and retail sectors. These job-losses mean greater and more widespread poverty with families often losing the stable income of their sole breadwinner. In today’s show we look at this critical issue in the context of an already crisis-ridden labour market with an estimated between 30 to over 40% unemployment rate with the figure being as high as 60% amongst Black working class youth.
